From the #1 New York Times bestselling author The Women, a moving, powerful novel about the fragile threads that bind together our lives and the astonishing potential of second chances

“A tender, beautifully told story of emotional growth, forgiveness [and] the possibility of miracles.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Madelaine Hillyard is a world-famous heart surgeon at the top of her game. Her personal life is far less successful. A loving but overworked single mom, she is constantly at odds with her teenage daughter. At sixteen, Lina is confused, angry, and fast becoming a stranger to her mother—a rebel desperate to find the father who walked away before she was born. Complicating matters for Madelaine are the vastly different DeMarco brothers: While priest Francis DeMarco is always ready to lend a helping hand, his brother, Angel, long ago took on the role of bad boy. Years earlier Angel abandoned Madelaine—and fatherhood—to go in search of fame and fortune. His departure left Madelaine devastated, but now he reappears and seeks help from the very people he betrayed—as a patient in dire need.

My step dad happened to find this at a Dollar General unaware of her status as a writer, and I found one of my new favorite authors. I felt myself angry on behalf of Lina, and yet Madelaine was so realistic that I could see where she was coming from as a parent (which let’s be real, I could not say the same about my own parents as a teen). It gave me a new perspective on all three of my parents, and it opened my eyes to some of the hardships faced by those in the priesthood. Angel even offered me a newfound perspective on a parent that walks away, and yet he is portrayed in a way that serves as a reminder that even those that mess up the worst are redeemable. Their story broke my heart, but it also helped stitch it back together. This was one of the first books that reflected just how complicated love can really be 🫀

I mean, if you are into that kind of thing, which I am, it’s alright. This is one of the more mushy, lovey dovey, romancy, pretty unrealistic books I have read from Kristin Hannah, and I’ve read most of hers. I found myself skipping some of the descriptional feeling paragraphs towards the end. That being said, my heart needs emotional lifting sometimes through books and if you feel the same this might do it for ya. There is some religion in this book, not over the top but be aware if you are atheist. I do love Kristin Hannah and I won’t hold this mediocre book against her; written in the 90s it’s an earlier book before she got her groove perfected- I would suggest another more recent title to friends and book lovers though for people new to her.

Embarrassingly horrible. Every interaction involves brushing a hair from the forehead (both read and imaginary), or touching the other person’s face. Hannah’s female leads are all the same: mistreated, with hearts of gold, who all suppress their feelings and find their great loves with jerks who realize they love them. Waste of time bad.
