NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The beloved author of The Women explores the heartbreaking choices facing a couple who have forgotten how to love each other.

“Hannah examines whether love and commitment are enough to sustain a marriage when two people who have put their individual dreams on ice get a chance to defrost them . . . in fast-moving prose punctuated by snappy asides.”—People

Elizabeth and Jackson Shore married young, raised two daughters, and weathered the storms of youth as they built a family. From a distance, their lives look picture perfect. But after the girls leave home, Jack and Elizabeth quietly drift apart. When Jack accepts a wonderful new job, Elizabeth puts her own needs aside to follow him across the country.

Then tragedy turns Elizabeth’s world upside down. In the aftermath, she questions everything about her life—her choices, her marriage, even her long-forgotten dreams. In a daring move that shocks her husband, friends, and daughters, she lets go of the woman she has become—and reaches out for the woman she wants to be.

The female protagonist was weak. I had much higher hopes for a strong ending. Left me empty.

Awful. Truly depressingly, boringly, awful. This is the author of The Great Alone and Nightingale? Impossible!

I could not believe this was written by the same author as “The Nightingale.” The woe-is-me wife and mother with emotionally fragile daughters whines throughout about her dreams. Every one of her experiences has meaning about her life. She separates from her cheating husband and finds herself, and later they realize their love is too strong to survive without each other. Trite and boring.

Since I Read the Nightingale, I thought I would read another book by this author. This was a mistake. I picked up distant shores and it was nothing but a whining ,pitiful, “searching for my life‘s purpose “book. It was so verbose I felt like she was just filling pages with descriptions of what the beach etc. looked like. I do not recommend.

I loved this book, it took me in first thing. The author made you feel for this couple. Laughed, cried made me feel good. Anyone over the age of 50 will enjoy this book.

What an heartwarming novel. Hannah truly reveals what a relationship can reveal when married a long time. How wives/mothers sacrifice themselves for the sake of their husbands and children to the point of losing themselves. But when you think it's over, LOVE truly prevails!

This was a good read, though I didn't have much compassion for the lead woman who doesn't have to work and feels unfulfilled with life. Wah! Her career choice at the end isn't going to help her do much more than shovel fries. Still, the plot kept my attention and I liked that the end saw multiple family relationships improved. Go ahead and buy.
